![]() You can choose to play at different levels of difficulty from Beginner to Expert, which goes from the players taking 3 turns before the Boss does, to the Boss taking the first turn. Really we just had to give it enough hit points and put the card in front of us. So, myself and AJ (co-host of Boardgames Daily) played Pirates of the Dark Star, and the setup was pretty easy. And for a good reason: it's FANTASTIC! So when Rob Dougherty (co-designer and founder of White Wizard Games) handed me a pre-release copy of Star Realms Frontiers, the latest and greatest in the lineup, let's just say I was a teensy bit excited! Star Realms Frontiers is a standalone release featuring 80 new trade row cards, and 8 over-sized Mission/Boss cards for solo and co-op play! So, does Star Realms Frontiers kick it into Hyperdrive? Or should it be chucked out the airlock? Let's find out! Lots of expansion packs, variants, and even a mobile app have made it one of the most successful deck-building franchises to date. Star Realms burst onto the scene as an inexpensive 2-player deck builder that came in a small box for just $15. One of the games to use the new mechanism was Star Realms. Vaccarino designed a little game called Dominion, creating what we gamers call deck-building, a new genre that has had many, many additions since then. But if you're buying boosters (Crisis Bases and Battleships, for example), play each one a few times until you're sure it's not making the draw pile too unreliable.A long time ago, Donald X. Erm, I bought more and started paring the combined deck. PPS: That advice aside, I basically bought expansions till I felt the combined deck was too much. Try for yourself, but don't buy a base set solely for that reason. PS: Star realms is best 2p, I don't even consider it at any other player count. Adds a lot, and doesn't fill the deck with chaff. There's several, each with a commander, a custom starting hand, and one ship. The only thing I'd really recommend are the command decks. Same with going with a single color, stuff like that. If you're doing a base heavy strategy, you might see zero bases the whole game. If you don't see low cost cards, neither of you will be able to afford anything for a while. Otherwise you lose any consistency in what comes up in the trade row, and games can be wildly swingy since you'll only see like 20% the deck even with focusing on blob cards. The only reason I use them is that I've constructed a pared down custom deck (rather than the 300 card monstrosity you get if you shuffle all the expansions together). I have tons of expansions (Crisis, United, the promos, the command decks) and you honestly don't want them. It's very slightly more complicated than the original core box, but negligibly so. Yes, most star realms core boxes, including frontiers, is a great place to start. r/tabletopgamedesign - Designer's subreddit.r/boardgameexchange - selling/buying/trading games. ![]() Game of the Week Calendar Related Sites & Subreddits The simplest use is to bold game names in your comment and add " /u/r2d8 getinfo" at the end of the post, but this post/sub has other features identified.
